For the last one year we have been telling you about the poultry project that was funded by Safaricom Foundation. This project was aimed at improving the lives of the destitute children who stay in the streets of Nakuru that Bethesda children's home is taking care of.

This project earned enough income to buy children school needs like books, unforms, writing materials and other needs. The income was used to provide children with food and pay their school fees too.

2ND PROJECT HAS NOW BEEN PUT IN PLACE: THE GREEN HOUSE TOMATOES PROJECT. The earnings from the poultry project has also been used to build a big green house and we have started to harvest the tomatoes.

Our 3rd project will be putting up the fish farming pond as soon as August.

On 30th July we had a big day for Bethesda.

The Safaricom Foundation come to Bethesda to launch/commision the poultry project that as enabled many projects to come up from the original one.

Many thanks to Safaricom Foundation Chairman Mr. Les Baillie who offially commisioned the project while his horst was Rev.Bishop Dr. Walter Obare Omwaza.

God bless Bethesda.

My Life History

My name is Joel*. I am a boy who has passed through many problems in life.

I was born here in Kenya in Nyeri district. When I was just one month old my father passed away and I was left with my mother who was taking care of me and my older sister. There life started to be hard because my fathers’ brother took our house and field, so my mother had nothing else to do but taking us to our grandmother to stay there. At that time I was five years old.

My grandmother took me to nursery school and I continued without any problem. When I reached class two, also my mother passed away. I was very confused in life, not knowing what to do. It also reached somewhere that my mothers’ brothers, who was my uncles, started to beat me without any reason, so I decided to run to the streets. At the age of seven I was thinking it was the safest place for me to be, but things were not like that. In the streets I passed through hard life; hunger, lack of shelter and being chased by policemen. So I was living with a lot of stress and I was using drugs to forget all these problems. But even using drugs was not the solution for my problems in the streets.

When I and some other boys were in the streets we met with some of the staff from Bethesda, and they talked with us. They told us to go to the church where they were giving us food, and water to wash our clothes. One day God opened a way for them to open a centre for rehabilitation for us street boys so we could forget about the street life. I was one of these who were living in the centre. After some days I decided to go to school, so I was supposed to go back to my grandmother, because in the centre there was not enough space, but I was provided with everything I needed for school.

Anyhow, life at my grandmothers’ place had not changed so finally I went back to the streets again. I was struggling to find a place where I could fit so it would be possible for me to finish my studies. At last I got somewhere where they helped me to finish my primary school, and I passed the exam. After that I was helped with school uniform and fees for the first term of secondary school. I was living in a small house, but I had to find some money to pay the rent.

Problems started again and once more I went back to the streets. There I was again found by well-wishers from Bethesda. We talked and they listened to my story and they have now accepted me back at their centre. So right now I’m hoping that I’ll be given an opportunity to continue with my studies and that I will be able to change my life; and even others lives. I know that God is always there for everyone. I’m very thankful to all well-wishers.

With greetings from Joel

*Joel is not the real name of the boy.

Added by Sofia: The boy will be assisted by a sponsor through Bethesda. We were not ready with the plans for him when he was writing, so he didn’t know by then. He will continue in the same secondary school where I started last term, but he will stay at Bethesda and commute with matatu in the rainy season as now, otherwise with the bicycle we have at the centre. We wish him well!
